The Science of Coloured Lenses: How Zeiss BioChrom Optics Change How You See and Feel

The short answer
Different wavelengths of light don't just change what you see — they measurably change how your brain and body respond. Zeiss spent years proving it, and built BioChrom™: precision-tinted lenses calibrated to specific wavelengths, each linked in university research to a specific effect — sharper focus, deeper calm, or faster alertness.

Colour is more than something you see
Light enters your eye and lands on the retina, where photoreceptors convert it into signals that travel to the brain. That much is simple. What's less obvious is where those signals go next.
Colour isn't processed in one tidy corner of the brain. It's handled across a network — including regions tied to memory and emotion, not just vision. That wiring is why a colour can trigger an emotional or physical response, not only a visual one. As Zeiss puts it in its BioChrom white paper, colours are “connected to our biological and physiological systems, which can influence and change our biorhythm and our physiological and psychological well-being.”
The visible spectrum runs from roughly 380 to 780 nanometres — violet and blue at the short end, green and yellow in the middle, red at the long end. Each band interacts with the eye and brain differently. That's the door Zeiss set out to open: not just protection from the sun, but a lens tuned to how a given wavelength makes you feel.
How Zeiss actually tested it
This is where BioChrom separates itself from “coloured glass.” Zeiss commissioned two independent scientific studies, using the same tools clinical neuroscience uses to measure attention, arousal and relaxation.
Study one — ZEISS Vision Science Lab, Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen (Germany)
Thirty-one participants viewed 96 standardised emotional images (the International Affective Picture System, used widely in research) with and without BioChrom tinted lenses. Researchers recorded brain activity via EEG, plus heart rate and skin conductance, to measure emotional and cognitive response.
Study two — Behavior and BrainLab, IULM University, Milan (Italy)
Sixty-four participants were split into a test group (wearing BioChrom lenses) and a control group (no tint), then completed tasks designed for each colour. Researchers used eye tracking, pupillometry, EEG and skin-conductance measurements to isolate each tint's effect.
Two labs, four measurement methods, standardised tasks. That's the credibility floor most “focus glasses” never come near.
A note on honesty: these are real physiological effects measured under specific conditions — not medical treatment, and not a guarantee. Zeiss is explicit that the effect “depends on a wide range of situational and personal factors,” and that every wearer finds what works for them. We frame it the same way.
The four states
Zeiss developed four BioChrom tints. We made a deliberate choice: keep the three with the clearest everyday use — focus, calm, alertness — and pair them with a neutral protective lens instead of a fourth mood tint. Three states for how you feel, one for when you just want the light down. Here's what the research found for each, and why we included it.
Flow — the amber lens (≈590nm)
For focus, contrast and staying on task.
Yellow-amber light is associated with wakefulness and attention. Pupillometry shows yellow-tinted lenses cause the pupils to dilate, which improves contrast perception — one reason yellow stimuli read as brighter and sharper.
In the IULM driving-simulation study, participants wearing the yellow BioChrom tint were measurably more focused on road hazards, while the control group's attention was more scattered. EEG analysis showed a significantly lower distraction level and a higher attention index (the beta/alpha ratio) — with the difference reaching statistical significance in the first two tasks. Zeiss's own consumer naming for this tint is “Focus.”
Best for: desk days, long reads, screen time — anywhere sustained attention matters. (Note: only the lightest tint intensity is suitable for driving.)
Calm — the green lens (≈530nm)
For recovery, lower stress and a creative lift.
Green is the most restful wavelength for the eye — it activates the retina's cones less strongly than other colours, which is part of why it reads as easy and calming. Decades of research link green to relaxation after stress, and one well-known study found people exposed to green before a creative task performed better on creativity tests — without being aware colour was the variable, suggesting the effect works unconsciously.
In the IULM stress test (a Stroop-style task), participants wearing the green BioChrom tint produced more correct answers than the control group — though Zeiss notes this particular result was not statistically significant. We report it as Zeiss does: a promising, consistent direction rather than hard proof. Zeiss's consumer name for this tint is “Relax.”
Best for: bright days, busy heads, and moments you want to reset.
Refresh — the blue lens (≈470nm)
For alertness and a faster switch-on.
Blue is the light your body most strongly reads as “morning.” Short-wavelength light around 447–480nm is the most potent regulator of the circadian system — it acts on melanopsin-containing cells in the retina and influences melatonin, the hormone governing your sleep-wake cycle. Prior research shows blue light promotes alertness and sustained attention.
The IULM study went further: after a 10-minute relaxation phase, participants wearing the blue BioChrom lens showed EEG patterns (reduced delta and theta bands) indicating a faster recovery from rest and lower sleepiness. On a follow-up reaction-time task, they performed better — supported by higher pupil diameter and skin-conductance response, both markers of greater cognitive activation. Zeiss's consumer name for this tint is “Refresh” — the same name we use.
Best for: slow starts, afternoon dips, the moment you need to come back online.
Shade — the neutral lens
For true-to-colour vision and full protection.
Not every moment needs a state. Shade is a classic neutral grey: honest colour, full sun protection, no agenda — just the frame doing the talking. It's the lens for driving, everyday wear, and anywhere you simply want the light dialled down without shifting the palette. Like every lens in the kit, it carries UV400 protection.
Where the science ends and we begin
Zeiss has made precision optics since 1846. Frequently asked questions
Do coloured lenses actually change how you feel, or is it placebo?
Zeiss measured physiological responses — brain activity (EEG), pupil dilation, skin conductance and reaction times — in two independent university studies. These are objective signals, not just self-report. That said, effects vary by person and situation, and Zeiss is clear the lenses are a wellness product, not a medical treatment.
What's the difference between BioChrom and normal tinted sunglasses?
Ordinary tints filter light for glare and UV. BioChrom tints are calibrated to specific wavelengths shown in research to influence alertness, focus or calm — developed with the Zeiss Vision Science Lab and tested at IULM University. They still block UV (UV400); they just do more.
Which lens should I use when?
Flow (amber) for focus and screen-heavy days; Calm (green) for stress recovery and creative work; Refresh (blue) for alertness and slow starts; Shade (neutral grey) for true colour and everyday protection. Zeiss notes the ideal use is personal — you find what works for you.
Are the lenses safe for driving?
Shade (neutral) is ideal for driving. For the tinted lenses, only the lightest tint intensity is suitable for driving — heavier tints are best kept for other settings.
Where are the lenses and frames made?
Both are 100% made in Italy. The lenses come from Zeiss Sunlens in Varese; the TR90 frames are Italian-made and hand-polished.
How do you swap the lenses?
